Hi,
Just a quickie post to let you know about the new DDRescue-GUI.
If this is a minor update to DDRescue-GUI, why download it?
This new release fixes a bug with v1.7 that, while otherwise low-importance, would eventually cause the GUI log file to become very large and would eventually become a problem when doing an extended recovery.
To download it, see the downloads page.
That’s all for now, but I have more stuff coming up very soon.

Hello, I use DDRescue-GUI, and it’s a wonderful program! From what I can tell, the smallest it can read/rescue is 32 kilobytes at a time. I was just wondering, if in a future update, the read/rescue size can be made as small as 16, 8, 4, 2, or even 1 kilobyte.
Hi,
Sorry for the confusion, but I believe what you’re looking at is the number of clusters to copy at a time. This size might be smaller or larger than 32 KB, because it varies based on the filesystem and disk size š
In theory I could give the user more of a selection here, but it’s very likely to make the recovery go a lot slower for not much benefit, as a cluster is supposed to be a chunk of data at a size that makes it easy to read quickly, essentially. This is because reading very small amounts of data on modern drives can be very slow, as they can be incapable of reading less than 4KB of data at a time, and for example just have to read 4KB and throw 3KB away when reading 1 KB of data.
Hope this helps,
Hamish
Hello! Sorry for my very low level English spoken because I’m a French people. This seems to be a great software. Fact is that Iām using Linux Mint cinnamon 18.2 and using synaptic only offers version 1.19.2 for ddrescue…
I’ve manually downloaded version 1.22 from the GNU ddrescue website and bam! It’s only a nebulous .tar.lz format archive that needs some compiling actions… Too much inaccessible to me thus.
Is there any way i can find a .deb file for ddrescue 1.22 so i can give it a try using your GUI? Unless i forgot something and it’s already included in your software… Sorry being that ignorant. I’m not too much lazy, i’m trying to do my best because Iām coming from the wonderful Windows world to the “friend-user” Linux one.
Why at all cost the 1.22 ddrescue version? Maybe i wont miss something since usually, new versions, are offered with improvements.
Also please, how to make Mint not to auto-mount an external USB hard drive? I’ve tried out using “disks” but the problem is that this disk is really sick and doesn’t appear in the list. Using testdisk and i can get a whole testdisk.log containing all directories and files from this usb disk.
Many thanks in advance and many thanks for keeping this so nice ddrescue GUI!
Hi Albert,
Fair enough not wanting to compile it, it’s a bit tricky.
It’s not included unless you’re running on a Mac. You could perhaps download the ddrescue package for the newest version of Ubuntu/Mint here: https://packages.ubuntu.com/artful/gddrescue, but it might not be compatible with your system. Do you need to use the new version ddrescue? If you don’t, 1.19 is pretty good š
I’m not really sure how to fix your auto-mount problem, apart from wait until the OS gives up trying to mount it.
Thanks!
Hamish
