Too Many Files Error

Post by Dave46 » Tue May 07, 2019 6:36 pm

I am new to DDrescue and I followed your Youtube tutorial. I tried 3 different USB drives ( 3 different brands) and
received the following error message with each one. ( Drive sizes were 16 GB, 8 GB, 32 GB)

We didn't get ddrescue's initial status! This probably means ddrescue aborted immediately. Please check all of your settings, and try again. Here is ddrescue's output, which may tell you what went wrong:

ddrescue: Too many files.
Try 'ddrescue --help' for more information.

I tried all the different preset setting options with no joy.

I am running Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia. I downloaded and installed DDrescue GUI with the terminal. The program opens fine.

The USB drives have Windows files on. I'm not sure how the drives are formatted. DDrescue "sees" the drives OK.

Thanks in advance !

Hello Dave,

Another user experienced this issue recently, and the issue was that there were spaces in the file path for the map and output files. Could you try saving the map and output file to a path where the folders and filenames have no spaces and let me know if that fixes it for you?

I shall fix this in the next release.

Hello Hamish,

Thanks for your reply ! I didn't see your message until today. I found the problem by watching your Youtube tutorial

several times. I didn't realize I had to put the file extension in the file name for the image file and the map file.

I saw it had been selected by default at the bottom of the page, by the file name, so I thought it would be added

automatically.

Thanks !

Hmm, you shouldn't have to do that. I'll look into this.

Thanks for letting me know, and glad you found a workaround :)

Hello. I'm getting this error as well. Has this been patched, and is this error something completely different?

Apologies for not noticing this post until now.

Could you make a new post with details of the error you're facing please?
