Tutorials

I’ve written a number of tutorial posts on this blog, so I thought it would be useful to link to them here.

DDRescue-GUI Basic Tutorial Videos

Back in March 2019 I made a set of basic tutorial videos for using DDRescue-GUI. Combined with the user guide, these should give you a solid understanding of how to perform a recovery.

DDRescue-GUI on Windows with Cygwin

This is not a tutorial for the faint of heart. I made this back in August 2019, but my progress on getting DDRescue-GUI running on Windows has been repeatedly stalled by various issues I’ve been having with Cygwin. Lately progress has been made though, so I’m hoping to have this done sooner rather than later.

Please Note: This is a very manual installation process, and will probably take a couple of hours to complete. Having said that, people have reported success with getting this to work. You also need to use DDRescue-GUI v2.0.2 for this to work – it will not work wth newer versions.

Using a Raspberry Pi as an access point

This is an incomplete tutorial that I wrote as part of the follow up to my new Raspberry Pi based project that’s been in the works for a while now. This tutorial uses the commonly-available RTL (Realtek) 8xxx – based wifi dongles. Unfortunately, the drivers for these dongles are also notorious, and I never quite got it to work. Nevertheless, the information in this tutorial will hopefully be useful to someone.

I will release another working tutorial for Ralink adaptors instead soon, as I have gotten that to work.

Using PhotoRec with DDRescue-GUI to recover deleted files

DDRescue-GUI is great at recovering data from damaged drives, but this doesn’t help you by itself if you’ve accidentally also deleted files or done a quick format on the drive. Using PhotoRec on the image DDRescue-GUI makes is a great way to get these files back as well as the others.

How to use the PSID SSD unlocker in Parted Magic

I wrote a tool to do this for Parted Magic back in 2019. This GUI provides an easy way to decrypt your locked drive using the Physical Security ID on the drive. This goes in to some amount of detail, so read the tutorial to learn more.

How to use WxFixBoot with Parted Magic to repair your bootloaders

More recently I made a tutorial video and post to demonstrate how you can use WxFixBoot with Parted Magic to repair your bootloaders.
