DDRescue-GUI 2.1.1 and GetDevInfo 1.1.0 Released!

I have recently released updates for both GetDevInfo and DDRescue-GUI. While at first these may seem like minor version bumps, they’ve been a long time in-the-making, and are definitely worth upgrading to.

Changes in GetDevInfo 1.1.0

  • Minor improvements to documentation.
  • Minor security improvements for Linux and macOS.
  • Support for Windows via Cygwin:
    • A package is coming in the official Cygwin repositories soon.
    • Shows basic device information and relates Linux-style device names to Windows drive letters.

The changes in GetDevInfo here were mostly to enable support for Cygwin for DDRescue-GUI. It took quite a long time to figure out a reliable way of gathering disk information in Cygwin. As of yet, it is somewhat incomplete, but good enough to run DDRescue-GUI. Further improvements are to come with a subsequent release.

Changes in DDRescue-GUI 2.1.0

  • Python 2 is no longer supported.
  • Now compatible with wxPython 4.1.x.
  • Developer docs are now more mobile friendly.
  • Various small fixes for all platforms, including fixes for unmounting output files on certain versions of macOS.
  • Support for Windows via Cygwin:
    • A package is coming in the official Cygwin repositories soon.
    • If possible, I will also release a stand-alone bundle similar to the macOS package, to make installation easier.
    • This is feature-complete, except for mounting the output file/device. Fortunately there are a lot of good tools to do this on Windows.
    • ^ Instructions will be coming soon in the user guide.

Summary

Just a quick post this time around, but as you can see there are a lot of changes here and it is worth upgrading to both GetDevInfo 1.1.0 and DDRescue-GUI 2.1.0. You can get the new versions from here and here. That’s it for now, but stay tuned – I have some more posts coming soon!

I'm currently studying for a Computing and IT degree with the Open University, and am a software developer as well. I enjoy coding in Python, C++ (still learning), and Java. Having written 4 open-source programs (hosted on launchpad.net), set up my own website, and started volunteering at Wimborne Model Town to work on their river control system, I still find the time to enjoy cycling, acting, photography, and playing bass guitar. I go climbing every now and then as well. More recently, I wrote my first commercial program, Disk Verifier, and created a PSID Unlocker GUI for Parted Magic. I also create tutorial and other informative videos for Parted Magic LLC.

I’ve followed your excellent tutorial from a year ago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFvaziWVPC8). How do I update to this newer version?

    • Unfortunately I do not yet have an installation procedure finished, despite having tested in Cygwin. I am working to get these into the official Cygwin repositories, which will make installation far easier, but it will take time to get them approved.

However, if you have a pressing need to update, I can probably update these instructions, but the result is likely to be less stable than the above solution. Do you need to update now?
